History
Susan Svoboda and Stuart L. Hart (Mgmt Faculty, Cornell) designed Transformation: The Business Strategy Laboratory following their work together at the University of Michigan. They recognized a need to not only comprehend business concepts and strategies using the lens of sustainability through readings, lectures, case studies and conferences, but the need to apprehend those strategies via experience. Professor Hart remains an active contributor since the Hart Portfolio of Sustainability Strategies is integral to Lab activities. (Gary Svoboda joined Realia Group to assist with Business Development.)
(Certified Instructors are drawn from a number of academic and business backgrounds. See below.)
The Transformation Lab (immersion exercise) was developed because it just wasn't good business to expend capital and take on risk without a means to really explore business options and to experience successes and failures in a "safe" environment. Susan went forward to form Realia Group to implement their design, while Stu, now the SC Johnson Professor of Global Sustainable Enterprise at Cornell, went forward with the academic work of continuing to expand the underlying conceptual model.

Certified Instructors and Lab Setup
Lab sessions require a certified instructor. Participation is 100% unscripted, participant-directed, action learning. That means Lab Instructors must be prepared to appropriately respond ad-hoc situations about 30% (or more) of the time during a Lab session. This contributes significantly to the value of a lab session and it's ability to deliver a truly creative environment for strategy development and implementation and building of critical leadership skills. Currently Realia Group has a number certified lab instructors in North American and a couple in Europe, but also enables businesses and educational programs to setup their own labs and become certified.
Setting up a business strategy lab may not require bunsen burners and test tubes, but it does require proper selection, and sometimes creation, of appropriate business challenges and scenario modification. Sample challenges used during various sessions are found in our Links&PDFs section.
