Stockholm School of Economics

Capitalism at the Crossroads...
What role should sustainability strategies play in business planning? Well, the current impact of oil prices on the economy is one indication. General unrest in the Middle East and terrorism can be viewed as another. Natural resource's availability is stretched. There simply doesn't seem to be enough to go around and poverty abounds. Exploiting the marginal and environmentally expensive only seems to postpone crisis situations.
Capitalism and multi-national corporations are powerful entities. A number of companies such as DuPont, Dow Chemical, LaFarge and SC Johnson among a number of others have made sustainability a core tenet of their firm's future. Stuart Hart's recent book "Capitalism at the Crossroads" outlines the opportunities and the necessity.
